“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
~Martin Luther King, Jr.
“To love beauty is to see light.”
“Come forth into the light of things, let nature be your teacher.”
Refraction is the change in direction of a wave (like light or sound) due to a change in its medium…as in, when a beam of light is shining into water and at the point where it hits the water, there is a change in it’s angle or direction. This is such an ordinary thing to see that we’re hard pressed to truly see it. In art classes, one of the first things taught is how to see differently…how to deconstruct one’s perceptions and see in terms such as lightness, darkness, texture and depth, vs. seeing things. This learning to see anew is always revolutionary and becomes the lifelong work of every artist. The metaphors for living are obvious: it is our perceptions that largely define us, and when we change those, we change everything.
