World Relief Program Manager/translator.
Chantal teaches us how to say da-ku-digga-digga, “I’m going to tickle you!” Her laughter is rich and contagious. Though she prays in Kirundi, we hear fervor and faith. She’s a woman to be near, but she is also a woman who suffers. Her Hutu family fled the genocide in 2003. In Kristin’s photo, she tells us the story of the Kibimba school massacre. Afterward, she will only say, “My country is so sick.” In the painting the stubborn determination by which she survived shows in the set of her lips. The shadow on her soul clouds her eyes. ~Dawn Harrell
